Kazimierz is a historic district of Kraków in southern Poland, formerly a separate town founded in the 14th century by King Casimir III “the Great”. Over time it became a major centre of Jewish life and culture in Kraków, with synagogues, cemeteries, and communal institutions concentrated around streets and squares such as Szeroka Street and Plac Nowy.
In the 20th century, the district’s Jewish community was devastated during the German occupation, while the built heritage largely remained; today Kazimierz is known both for its preserved Jewish landmarks and for its contemporary cultural scene (cafés, galleries, festivals).
