Sentosa is a popular resort island located in Singapore, situated off the southern coast of the main island. Covering an area of approximately 5 square kilometres, Sentosa is connected to the mainland by road, cable car, pedestrian boardwalk, and the Sentosa Express monorail. It is one of Singapore’s most visited tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors annually.

History

Originally known as Pulau Blakang Mati, the island was once a British military fortress. After independence, Singapore redeveloped the island into a leisure destination, officially renaming it Sentosa, which means "peace and tranquility" in Malay, in 1972.

Attractions

Sentosa features a wide variety of attractions catering to families, adventure seekers, and leisure travellers. Key highlights include:

  • Universal Studios Singapore – A theme park with movie-themed rides and shows.

  • S.E.A. Aquarium – One of the world’s largest aquariums, housing more than 100,000 marine animals.

  • Adventure Cove Waterpark – A water park featuring water slides, wave pools, and snorkelling experiences.

  • Beaches – Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong Beach are popular for sunbathing, water sports, and beach clubs.

Visitors can reach Sentosa via:

  • Sentosa Express Monorail (from VivoCity).

  • Sentosa Boardwalk, a pedestrian walkway with travelators.

  • Cable Car from Mount Faber or HarbourFront.

  • Private vehicles and taxis, via the Sentosa Gateway road link.

Tourism and Development

Sentosa is managed by the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), which oversees its transformation into a world-class destination. It is home to major resorts, including Resorts World Sentosa, which houses a casino, hotels, and integrated leisure facilities.
