Loch Morar is a long freshwater loch in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, in the rugged “Rough Bounds” west of Fort William. It’s widely known as the deepest freshwater loch in the British Isles, reaching about 310 m (≈1,017 ft) at its deepest point.

Geography and physical features

Shape & size: An elongated loch running roughly east–west, about 18.8 km long with a surface area around 26.7 km².
Depth: Maximum depth commonly reported at ~310 m, with an average depth around ~86 m in some surveys/summaries.
Glacial origin: Formed by glacial processes after the last ice age.

Main inflow: River Meoble (plus other streams/tributaries).
Outflow: River Morar.

Ecology

Loch Morar is often described as clear and nutrient-poor (oligotrophic)—conditions that shape its aquatic plant and animal communities.

Situated in the Scottish Highlands approximately 37 kilometers (23 miles) southwest of Inverness, Loch Ness is a large freshwater loch with a length of approximately 37 kilometers. Its name is derived from the River Ness, which originates from the northern end.

While best known for claimed sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, a mythical creature believed to inhabit its murky waters, Loch Ness is one of a series of interconnected, dark bodies of water in Scotland. Its water visibility is remarkably low due to the high peat content in the surrounding soil.

The loch's southern end is connected to Loch Oich by the River Oich and a section of the Caledonian Canal, while its northern end is connected to Loch Dochfour via the River Ness, which ultimately leads to the North Sea via the Moray Firth.

At 56 km2 (22 sq mi), Loch Ness is the second-largest Scottish loch by surface area after Loch Lomond. However, due to its considerable depth, it is the largest by volume in Great Britain.

Its maximum depth of 230 meters (126 fathoms; 755 feet) makes it the second deepest loch in Scotland, after Loch Morar. Loch Ness contains more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined and is the most massive body of water in the Great Glen, which runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south.

Drumnadrochit: This is the largest village on Loch Ness and is home to the "Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition," which provides information about the history and legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

Plockton - charming village atmosphere, Lochalsh

The village of Plockton, located in the Lochalsh area of Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands, had a population of 468 as of 2020.

The settlement sits on the shores of Loch Carron, facing eastward and protected from the prevailing winds. Thanks to the North Atlantic Drift, which influences the local climate, Plockton experiences mild temperatures despite its far-northern latitude, creating a favorable environment for the growth and prosperity of plants such as the Cordyline australis palm.

History

Plockton's architectural heritage is primarily from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with many of its houses dating back to this period. The village was established as a planned fishing community in the northern part of the Lochalsh region, following the introduction of sheep farming in the years 1814-1820. This led to the relocation of the local population from their old hamlets in Glen Garron, resulting in the founding of the villages of Jeantown and Plockton along the shores of Loch Carron (Geddes: 1945, pp38).

Tourism activities

Plockton has become a popular tourist destination due to its picturesque location and charming village atmosphere. The village's scenic beauty has also made it a sought-after filming location, as seen in the popular television series Hamish Macbeth, which was shot in Plockton and substituted for the fictional Lochdubh, with Robert Carlyle in the lead role.

Additionally, Plockton was used for various scenes in the film The Wicker Man and in the Inspector Alleyn Mysteries television series.

Lanark, situated in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, is a small town located 20 kilometres south-east of Hamilton. The town is positioned at the confluence of Mouse Water and the River Clyde, and had a population of 9,050 in 2016.

Having attained the status of a royal burgh in 1140, Lanark played a pivotal role in the historical context of Lanarkshire, being the county town until Hamilton claimed this title in modern times. Climate

Similar to the majority of the British Isles and Scotland, Lanark is subjected to a maritime climate that features cool summers and mild winters. In particular, Lanark's rural, inland location results in a climate profile that experiences frequent frost, albeit with significant variation across the region.

For example, Carnwath, located approximately 6 miles to the east, is located in a sheltered, upland sandy-soiled area where frost has been recorded during all months. On average, nearly 100 nights per year report the occurrence of frost, and during an average year, temperatures can plummet to as low as −14.3 °C (6.3 °F) on the coldest night.

Furthermore, while Lanark is positioned on a hilltop above the River Clyde, the phenomenon of katabatic drainage lowers the incidence of frost. Overall, the local climate of Lanark is characterized by a distinct tendency for frost occurrences, with variability and nuances arising from specific topographic and geographical factors.

Twatt is a settlement in the parish of Birsay on the Mainland of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. It was previously the location of RNAS Twatt (HMS Tern),1940–1949.

The settlement name originates from the Old Norse þveit, meaning 'small parcel of land'. The Norse word commonly produces in England the place name element Thwaite.

The name Twatt is similar to the common English expletive "twat", an insult used to express contempt or derision for a person. The village's name featured at number four in a list of the most vulgar-sounding names in Rude Britain, along with its Shetland counterpart. There is also an Upper Twatt Road on the island in Stenness.
