Mátra Landscape Protection Area, Hungary

The Mátra Landscape Protection Area, located in northern Hungary, encompasses a large portion of the Mátra Mountains. It was officially declared a protected landscape area in 1985 (sometimes listed as 1986) and covers approximately 11,800 to 12,200 hectares.

Key features:

It is managed by the Bükk National Park Directorate (as part of the larger protected-area system in the region).
The landscape is mountainous, with varied terrain: volcanic geology (andesite, etc.), striking ridges, high elevation forested zones, and rich biodiversity.
The area protects both natural habitats (forests, montane species, rare flora & fauna) and cultural/historical features (mining heritage, old settlements).

Elizabeth Square, Budapest, Hungary

Erzsébet tér (also known in English as Elizabeth Square) is a prominent public square in the heart of Budapest (on the Pest side). It lies adjacent to Deák Ferenc tér and is very central, served by multiple metro lines M1, M2, M3.

A major feature is the historic Danubius Fountain, designed circa 1880–1883 by architect Miklós Ybl; it depicts the great rivers of Hungary (Danube, Tisza, Drava, Sava).

More recently, the square has been modernised with green lawns, shaded walkways, a reflecting pool, cafés and a large Ferris-wheel (the Budapest Eye) giving panoramic city views.

Historically, the square had different names: originally named in 1858 for Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”) of Austria-Hungary; during communist era it was renamed first as Stalin Tér (1946-53) and then Engels Tér. It reverted to Erzsébet Tér in 1990.

It is described as a place to relax, people-watch, or use as a base to access nearby shopping, cafés and transport.

Tips for visit

Visit around sunset for great photo opportunities of the Ferris wheel and the city skyline.
Accessible by public transport: nearest metro station is Deák Ferenc tér (lines M1, M2, M3).
The grassy areas and shaded benches make it a good break spot when exploring central Budapest.
In warmer months, the reflecting pool and outdoor cafés make it a lively area.
Keep in mind, as a central urban space it can get crowded, especially in evenings or events.

Danube-Ipoly National Park, Hungary

The Duna-Ipoly National Park (Hungarian: Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park) is a protected area in Hungary, stretching across the region between the Danube River (Duna) and the Ipoly River. It was established in 1997.

The park encompasses a variety of landscapes: highland forests (in the Pilisszent‑László Hills and Börzsöny Mountains), river valleys, karst caves and plains.

It is known for its biodiversity, including many caves (some 334 in the Pilis region) and habitats that are rare in Hungary.

Hortobágy National Park, Eastern Hungary

Hortobágy National Park is the largest semi-natural grassland area in Europe, located on the Great Hungarian Plain in Eastern Hungary.

Aggtelek National Park is a national park in Northern Hungary, in the Aggtelek Karst region. The most significant values of the national park are the special surface formations and caves in this limestone landscape.

The park consists of 280 caves with different sizes. The largest stalactite cave of Europe is situated in this area: the Baradla cave (26 km long, of which 8 km is in Slovakia, known under the name of Domica). Several of the caves have different specialities. For example, the Peace Cave has a sanatorium which help treating people suffering from asthma. [source]
